HWA GETS SPECIAL MENTION - 2000 ESCAP HRD AWARD

The Handicaps Welfare Association gets a pat on the back from the United Nations for helping to remove physical, social and economic barriers facing disabled people in Singapore.

The kudos takes the form of an "honourable mention" by the UN agency, the Economic & Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in the Human Resource Development Award for 2000.

HWA was one of the 129 welfare agencies which vied for the award. The Association's sub-mission was backed by letters from Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr R. Sinnakaruppan, MP for Kreta Ayer-Tanglin GRC.

The theme of the competition was "Empowerment of People With Disabilities". The ESCAP commendation was made in a letter to the Association.

ESCAP Executive Secretary Mr Kim Hak-Su, said HWA was selected for honourable mention "in view of its success in breaking physical, economic and social barriers faced by persons with disabilities."

Sharing the honour with HWA were:
New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, Hongkong, China; and
Dignity and Services, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

The winner of the 2000 ESCAP HRD Award was the Spastics Society of Tamilnadu, India.

Runners-up were:
The Institute of Research, Empowerment and Development for People with Different Abilities, Yogyakarta, Indonesia; and
Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, Savar, Bangladesh.
