Embracing Hope, Regaining Independence!

Dear Donor,

My name is Tan Yan Lie Francesca, a 73-year-old beneficiary of HWA. I was once a businesswoman, fully independent and thriving in my career. However, life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Myelo-polyradiculitis, a spinal infection that affected the lower part of my body.

Being initially able-bodied, I became wheelchair-bound and faced the harsh reality of losing my ability to perform basic tasks such as toileting, showering, transferring, and dressing myself. During this difficult time, I felt utterly lost and even had suicidal thoughts. But with strong determination and the support of those around me, I found the strength to move forward. HWA’s rehabilitation services have been a lifeline in this journey. 20 years ago, I couldn’t sit stably, but consistent therapy from HWA has helped me regain stability and prevent further muscle deterioration. This supports my goal of being as independent as possible, reducing the burden on my caregiver. My challenges are not mine alone. There are many others like me who rely on HWA’s services to regain hope and independence. To continue their programs & services in a sustainable manner, HWA is organizing its annual Wheel, Walk, or Jog & Family Carnival on 17 May 2025 at the Singapore Sports Hub – OCBC Square to raise funds.
